About Magnet Cove

Magnet Cove occupies a basin-like pocket in Hot Spring County's Ouachita Mountains, about twelve miles southeast of Hot Springs. Arkansas Highway 51 crosses the community north of U.S. 270, while ridges and valleys around the cove give the place a distinct geological shape. The name comes from magnetite in the surface soil; the area's unusual igneous and mineral formations have drawn geologists, mineralogists, and rockhounds for generations.

Magnet Cove incorporated in 2000, then residents voted in December 2006 to suspend incorporation, so today's place is a census-designated community without an active town government. That change makes the wider map matter: Hot Springs provides larger services, Hot Spring County handles countywide functions, and Highway 51 keeps the cove connected to nearby settlements. The community's life is written into the hills—mineral collecting, geology, scattered homes, rural roads, and the shape of a former municipality inside the Ouachita landscape. The cove's rocks also keep field trips and collecting visits in the local calendar each year.
