Mahanoy City, PA

Mahanoy City is a Schuylkill County borough in Pennsylvania’s Coal Region, set in a valley below Broad Mountain. Anthracite mining began here in 1861; by 1910 the borough had reached about 16,000 people as Irish and other immigrant workers arrived for the mines. The Mahanoy Tunnel, cut through Broad Mountain in 1863, gave coal a rail route toward Philadelphia and the eastern seaboard. That tunnel traces the town’s location as neatly as any boundary line: the borough grew where workers, mines, and the railroad met.

Molly Maguire Historic Park at Centre and Catawissa streets carries the borough’s most recognizable memorial, while the Mahanoy Area Historical Society documents the bitter 1870s conflicts over wages, mine control, and alleged Molly Maguire activity. Pennsylvania Route 54 runs along Centre Street as the main through-road, with the school complex and commercial blocks tied to the same valley corridor.
