Mahnomen is a city in Mahnomen County, Minnesota, United States, along the Wild Rice River. The 2020 census counted 1,240 residents. Mahnomen is the seat of Mahnomen County. U.S. Highway 59 and Minnesota State Highway 200 are two of the main routes in Mahnomen. The city is served by Mahnomen ISD 432. That mix gives Mahnomen a clear local shape within Minnesota, with older layers still visible in current places. The local scoop is a place whose streets, landmarks, and institutions keep its earlier story close to the present. The name "Mahnomen" comes from manoomin, the Ojibwe word for wild rice. A post office called Mahnomen has been in operation since 1904. Mahnomen is in the western part of its county, along U.S. Route 59, which leads north 25 miles to Erskine and south 36 miles to Detroit Lakes.
