Mahnomen, MN (City)

Mahnomen is the seat of Mahnomen County, set along the Wild Rice River in northwestern Minnesota. The city's name comes from manoomin, the Ojibwe word for wild rice, tying the county seat to the river and the wetland country around it. A post office has operated here since 1904. The 2020 census counted 1,240 residents, and U.S. 59 and Minnesota 200 connect Mahnomen with the wider Red River region.

County offices, City Hall, the library, and Mahnomen County Historical Society give the town a service role larger than its population. The city also keeps links to White Earth Nation and the Manoomin Arts Initiative in its local landscape, bringing the meaning of wild rice into present-day cultural life. Mahnomen ISD 432 serves local students. The Wild Rice River runs through the middle of the story: it names the place, shapes the surrounding watershed, and gives the county seat a physical line beside its streets and civic buildings through the community.
