Mahtowa, MN

Mahtowa is a Carlton County census-designated place in Mahtowa Township between Cloquet and Moose Lake. The 2020 census counted 332 residents. County Road 4 and County Road 61 meet the community near I-35, which places it about 13 miles southwest of Cloquet and gives the small settlement a direct route into the larger Northland road network. Mahtowa’s name and township setting sit within a county shaped by Ojibwe homelands, logging, railroads, and the 1918 fire that changed many Carlton County communities.

The area’s older economy included tie, post, and lath mills and charcoal kilns, while farms and woodland still fill the spaces between homes.
