Makanda, IL

Makanda is a Jackson County village seven miles south of Carbondale, set among the Shawnee National Forest, Giant City State Park, and the lakes of the southern Illinois uplands. The village's name comes from a Native American chieftain, and its local history includes the Union flag that Theodore and Al Thompson flew from a hill between Makanda and Cobden after Lincoln's inauguration. That combination of wooded country, old roads, and small-town storefronts gives the place a strong visual link between landscape and history.

The Makanda Boardwalk is the village's best-known gathering strip, with artisan shops and seasonal events.
