Malakoff, TX

Malakoff sits in western Henderson County at the meeting point of a highway town and a reservoir region. Texas 31 runs through the city, with Athens about nine miles west and Corsicana about 27 miles northwest. The name comes from the Russian fort at Malakoff during the Crimean War, though the town's working history is closer to East Texas: cotton gave way to lignite mining, and mines and a nearby power plant drove growth in the early twentieth century. After the mines closed, Cedar Creek Reservoir helped pull the area into a new chapter.

That lake relationship is practical as well as recreational. Texas Parks and Wildlife lists public ramps reached from Malakoff by FM 198, and the reservoir is part of the city's water supply through its surface-water treatment plant. Downtown still sits in the middle of town life, with shops, services, and the Malakoff ISD campuses serving families from the city and nearby rural roads. The result is a place with a highway grid, a school district, a reservoir economy, and a past written in coal seams.
