Malden-on-Hudson, NY

Malden-on-Hudson, commonly called Malden, is a hamlet and census-designated place in eastern Saugerties on the west bank of the Hudson River. The community sits north of the Village of Saugerties, with the river on one side and the Catskill foothills and town roads on the other. A public boat launch at Malden Park keeps the waterfront active for small boats, kayaks, and the Malden Yacht Club. The 2020 census counted 365 residents, so the hamlet remains small even though its river frontage connects it to a much larger Hudson Valley landscape.

Malden's older story is about shipping. In 1808, Asa Bigelow developed a riverfront business here, and his Bigelow Dock and warehouses handled timber, hides, bluestone, and later Portland cement. A brick store built by Bigelow in 1810 still stands as a private residence. Icehouses in Malden supported the Hudson River ice trade from the 1880s into the early twentieth century, while quarries around Malden and nearby Saugerties sent bluestone toward New York City for paving and building work. The hamlet's present-day boat launch and river views sit on top of that commercial past. Malden-on-Hudson is a small residential place with the feel of an old working waterfront still attached to Saugerties.
