Maltby, WA

A major public landscape in Maltby is a 793-acre forest and wetland preserve. Paradise Valley Conservation Area protects the headwaters of salmon-rearing Bear Creek and offers more than 13 miles of designated trails. Hikers can use every trail, while roughly ten miles accommodate mountain bikes and seven miles accommodate horses. The trailhead requires no parking permit, but its small lot often reaches capacity on busy weekends; Snohomish County was gathering public input in 2026 on better circulation, parking, trail entry, and possible uses for the former farmstead buildings. The park provides deep access to woods close to home while revealing the pressure that regional use places on a modest rural trailhead.

That rural appearance coexists with expensive housing and a daily dependence on roads. Maltby counted 11,277 residents in the 2020 census across 19.31 square miles. During 2020 through 2024, 90.5 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, their median value was $1,002,100, and the mean trip to work was 28.4 minutes. State Routes 522 and 524 meet at the community's commercial center. WSDOT still describes the stretch of SR 522 east from Paradise Lake Road as one lane in each direction and notes that congestion at the intersection spills onto side streets. A plan to widen the highway and replace the signal with an interchange remains in design without construction funding, so the bottleneck is current reality rather than a finished improvement.

Smaller institutions fill the space between acreage homes and regional roads. An all-volunteer club maintains the Maltby Community Center, rents its 205-person hall for gatherings, and hosts Scout groups and public meetings. Maltby Community Park has grass sports fields, and a county agreement approved in March 2026 funded a feasibility study for converting them to synthetic turf. Residents get extensive woods close to home, but most regional movement still converges on an unresolved highway choke point.
