Mammoth, AZ

Mammoth is an incorporated Pinal County town founded in 1876 as a mining camp on the west bank of the San Pedro River, at the base of the Galiuro Mountains. The town took shape around the Mammoth Mine and neighboring workings, giving it a copper-and-gold history that is still visible in the surrounding roads and hills. San Manuel lies nearby, and Tucson is part of the region’s wider service map. The 2020 census counted 1,076 residents, while the town’s current government dates to incorporation in 1958.

The nearby San Manuel Mine later supported many families in Mammoth. It opened in 1952, grew into one of the country’s largest underground copper mines, and finally stopped production in 2003 after BHP had taken ownership. The Mammoth Miners Memorial preserves the memory of underground workers and the more than fifty men who died in the mine. Town Hall, a seasonal community pool, local utilities, and the magistrate court give Mammoth its present civic structure. The result is a small desert town where the San Pedro River, the Galiuro Mountains, and the mines all remain part of the same story.
