Mammoth Spring, AR

Mammoth Spring sits in Fulton County beside a major natural feature: a spring that sends millions of gallons of water into Spring Lake and then the Spring River. The city’s name comes from that steady flow, and the water has shaped its work and recreation for generations. At Mammoth Spring State Park, visitors can fish, hike, launch boats, and rent seasonal boats on the lake. The park’s visitor center doubles as an Arkansas Welcome Center, giving the place a useful stop along the north Arkansas road network.

The park also keeps the town’s railroad and industrial past in view. A restored 1886 Kansas City, Fort Scott and Memphis Railroad depot now houses a railroad museum, while remnants of an 1887 limestone dam and hydroelectric works recall the effort to turn the spring into power. Mammoth Spring became a state park in 1957, but the spring itself remains the town’s defining presence: clear water gathering in a lake, spilling toward the river, and setting the pace for a small Fulton County city.
