About Manchester

Manchester is a village inside the larger Town of Manchester in Ontario County, with NY 21 running through the center and NY 96 and the Thruway just north. The first settlement here was called Coonsville; as local manufacturing grew, the name changed to Manchester, and the village was incorporated in 1892. Railroads then gave the place its big working-era identity: the Lehigh Valley yard brought jobs, shops, and a steady stream of trains, with the Canandaigua Outlet crossing the village near the rail trestle.

You can still read that history into the current layout. The Manchester Gateway Trail runs about 1.5 miles from NY 96 toward Clifton Street and Water Street, with interpretation kiosks near the fire hall and the old trestle. Main Street, the municipal lot, the village hall, and the fire station keep the center easy to navigate, while the trail follows the outlet below grade. The local scoop is a compact Finger Lakes village whose story runs from an early crossroads and railroad yard to a creekside route within reach of Canandaigua.
