Manchester, VT

Manchester Village is an incorporated village within the town of Manchester, first settled in 1761 in Bennington County. From 1761 to 1850 it was a crossroads lined with taverns and inns; after 1850, the Equinox Hotel helped turn the village into a resort destination for visitors from the growing cities of the Northeast. The first marble sidewalk arrived in 1850, and by 1890 the village had four miles of marble sidewalks. Its buildings and streets preserve a remarkably complete record of resort development from 1850 to 1925, with older structures now serving newer uses.

The village sits between the Green Mountains and Taconic Range, with Equinox Mountain shaping the western side of the Manchester landscape. The wider village setting includes the Southern Vermont Arts Center, the 914-acre Equinox Preserve, Burr and Burton Academy, and Hildene, Robert and Mary Lincoln's summer home. Those institutions extend the village's historic resort role into art, education, conservation, and public programs. Manchester Village remains a small municipal place with its own trustees and land-use rules, while the surrounding town supplies the mountain, cultural, and school destinations that give the village its regional reach.
