Mangum, OK

Mangum is Greer County’s seat in southwestern Oklahoma, with a history that begins on the Great Western Cattle Trail. The trail crossed the eastern part of Old Greer County from about 1876, carrying herds north toward Kansas shipping points. Mangum began in 1882 as Tin City, a cowboy name tied to tin cans nailed over plank walls, and later took the name of Captain A. S. Mangum, a San Jacinto veteran. The Old Greer County Museum occupies a 1907 hospital building and holds over 60 rooms of regional artifacts. Mangum is an Oklahoma county seat where cattle trails, Texas history, and a tin-can nickname remain part of the local vocabulary.
