Manning, IA

Manning is a Carroll County city along Iowa 141 and the upper West Nishnabotna River, a town whose map still shows the railroad work that made it. The city’s name honors Orlando Harrison Manning, an Iowa lieutenant governor. Main Street, City Park, the river, and the Milwaukee Railroad trestle give the place its basic layout; the trestle still carries BNSF trains over the Nishnabotna. IKM–Manning Community School District serves the surrounding rural area.

The rail crossing was once busier: Milwaukee, Great Western, and Chicago & North Western lines met here, and local grain shipping followed. Manning’s arts-and-antiquities tour ties that industrial story to City Park, the 1928 light plant, the German Lutheran congregation founded in 1901, and the trestle that was guarded during World War II. The city’s agricultural work still sits behind the landmarks, even after the old rail network consolidated. Put Manning on the upper Nishnabotna, with an active rail bridge and a main street that remembers when grain and passengers arrived by several lines.
