Mantorville, MN

At the 2020 census, Mantorville was a Dodge County city of 1,111 people and the county seat, about 15 miles west of Rochester on the South Branch of the Middle Fork of the Zumbro River. Peter and Riley Mantor arrived in 1853, and the settlement was founded the following year. The town's limestone is the feature locals cannot really separate from its history: stone quarried here was soft and easy to carve fresh, then hardened as it met the weather. That made it useful for sturdy buildings well beyond Dodge County.

Downtown Mantorville keeps the material on display. The courthouse, the Hubbell House, and other limestone buildings sit within the Mantorville Historic District, which follows Minnesota Highway 57 and 5th Street and was listed on the National Register in 1974. The city shares its school system with nearby Kasson, while the river, old mill country, and rolling farm landscape give the county-seat center a clear setting. Mantorville is small, but its buildings carry the local geology right onto the street, which is why a walk through downtown doubles as a lesson in how the town got made.
