Maple Valley got its name from the thick groves of vine maples that early settlers found in the late 1800s, and that lush, wooded backdrop still defines the community today. Over the years, the old railroad lines that once transported timber and coal from nearby mines have been converted into scenic multi-use trails. The Green-to-Cedar Rivers Trail cuts right through town and connects with the larger Cedar River Trail system, giving runners, cyclists, and dog walkers miles of continuous, tree-lined paths. Since Maple Valley incorporated in the late 1990s as a quiet suburban retreat, most working residents commute to regional job hubs across King County like Bellevue, Renton, and Seattle, or work remotely while enjoying the peaceful, forested setting.

Lake Wilderness is the centerpiece of outdoor life in Maple Valley. Originally developed as a lakeside vacation resort in the 1920s, the property is now a massive municipal park anchored by a historic lodge that hosts community classes, meetings, and weekend celebrations. The park offers a sandy swimming beach, docks for fishing and paddleboarding, open playfields, and walking trails. Next to the main park, the Lake Wilderness Arboretum features quiet woodland paths and lovingly maintained display gardens, giving residents a peaceful place for morning walks and garden tours.

Local events throughout the year help create a friendly, small-town atmosphere. Maple Valley Days kicks off the summer every June at Lake Wilderness Park, drawing crowds for a parade, carnival rides, food vendors, and live entertainment. Throughout the spring, summer, and early fall, the Maple Valley Farmers Market takes over the city's Legacy Site on Saturday mornings, offering fresh regional produce, baked goods, and artisan crafts. Between the weekly markets, outdoor summer concerts, and youth sports leagues, there is always an easy way to connect with neighbors.
