Mapleton, IA

Mapleton is a Monona County city on the Maple River, with 1,165 residents in the 2020 census. The river runs through the town’s history and its geography. Old Mapleton was laid out on the west side of the river in 1857, but the community shifted east when the Northwestern Railroad arrived in 1877. East Mapleton grew beside the tracks, incorporated in 1878, and adopted the shorter Mapleton name in 1896. That two-sided beginning still helps make sense of the city: river, rail corridor, and Main Street are close together.

Maple Valley–Anthon–Oto Community School District serves local students, carrying the school connection across several small towns in the Maple River country. The city’s business district, churches, medical offices, and residential streets sit in the farm landscape of western Iowa, with U.S. 20 and regional roads providing the wider link. Mapleton is a place where a river gave the town its name, a railroad moved its center across the water, and the older west-bank settlement remains part of the local memory.
