Mapleton, ME

Mapleton is an Aroostook County town on the south bank of the Aroostook River, where the 2020 census counted 1,886 residents. The town was incorporated in 1880, likely taking its name from the maple trees that were common in its forests. The land has fertile sandy loam, and potatoes became the main crop; an early starch factory processed the harvest. The Presque Isle Stream and Libby Brook run through the southern part of town, adding waterpower and a network of smaller valleys.

School Administrative District 1 serves Mapleton, continuing a local school tradition that once included seven public schoolhouses. The town's roads connect it with Presque Isle, Washburn, Chapman, Castle Hill, and the wider Aroostook farm belt. Potato fields still make the town's seasons visible in the landscape. Mapleton's older economy also included sawmills, shingle machines, and a potash factory, so the town's story reaches beyond potatoes alone. River, fields, school buses, and forest roads still give Mapleton its northern Maine shape.
