Marathon, NY

Marathon is a Cortland County town and village in New York's Southern Tier, southeast of Cortland and crossed by the Tioughnioga River. U.S. Route 11, Interstate 81, and State Route 221 meet around the village, giving the community a highway role that reaches beyond its farm roads. The first settlers arrived in 1794, and the town lies within the old Central New York Military Tract. Marathon's landscape is a mix of river valley, wooded hills, working farms, and the small village center.
