About Marble

Marble is a Gunnison County statutory town in the upper Crystal River valley, where the Elk Mountains close around a community named for the stone taken from nearby Yule Quarry. The town incorporated in 1899, and its marble works later supplied blocks for the Lincoln Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The quarry and mill declined after 1917, but the stone still shapes Marble’s local map, from the river’s white debris to the road toward the old Crystal townsite. Marble is a mountain town whose name is also its industry, material, and history.
