Marble Hill, MO

Marble Hill is Bollinger County's seat at the meeting of Missouri 34 and 51, just north of Hurricane and Crooked Creeks. The name comes from the area's marble-like limestone. The town's first versions had different names: New California in 1842, Dallas in 1851, and Marble Hill from 1868 after the Dallas name caused confusion with Dallas County. South across Crooked Creek, Lutesville grew around a railroad depot and became a shipping and trading point before merging with Marble Hill in 1985. That old split gives the layout its logic: courthouse-town center on one side of the creek, former rail-town ground on the other.

Will Mayfield College adds another layer. It moved to Marble Hill in 1880, and its Arts and Science Building now houses Bollinger County Library on Mayfield Drive. The Will Mayfield Heritage Foundation preserves the college story after the museum closed in 2021. The park's annual cooking competition is the kind of local tradition that turns the county seat into a gathering place beyond courthouse business. Marble Hill feels like a practical southeast Missouri center whose history is visible in the creek, the former Lutesville side, and the library's old college building.
