Marianne, PA

Marianne is a census-designated place spread across Paint and Elk townships in Clarion County, east of Shippenville and northwest of Clarion, the county seat. It is a rural crossroads community rather than an incorporated borough, with Route 66 and township roads doing the orienting. The Clarion River lies to the south, while Paint Creek and Toby Creek drain the surrounding hills. If you are headed through, think of Marianne as part of the county-seat country between Clarion and Shippenville.

The older story is timber and water. Paint Township’s first settlers arrived around 1820, schools were operating by 1828, and mills followed the creeks; Paint Mills grew on Paint Creek while lumber operations worked along the Clarion River and Little Toby. The township history records a union church at Paint Mill Station on the Pittsburgh and Western Railroad in 1880. Marianne itself does not offer one headline landmark. Its character comes from being a named residential pocket inside a landscape of creeks, old mill sites, farms, and county roads. Put Clarion nearby, keep the waterways in view, and the place makes sense as part of the working hills around the Clarion Valley.
