Marietta, OK (City)

Marietta is Love County’s seat, a Red River Valley city of 2,719 where north-south travel has always mattered. Settlers came for fertile bottomland suited to cotton, cattle, and other crops; today I-35, State Highways 32 and 77, and the Santa Fe rail line keep the town connected to Ardmore, the Red River, and the Texas border. The county seat has also held onto a weekly paper, the Marietta Monitor, which the county’s own historical summary notes has remained in the same family since 1896.

At the center is the Love County Courthouse, a three-story Georgian building completed in 1910 and listed on the National Register. The town’s name has two competing origin stories—one credits first postmaster Jerry C. Washington with blending Mary and Etta, while another points to Marietta, Pennsylvania—which feels fitting for a place built at a crossroads between Oklahoma and Texas. Frontier Days arrives each June, and the surrounding county still carries the Red River agricultural mix of cattle, pecans, grains, hay, peanuts, and watermelons. Marietta is the sort of county seat where the courthouse, newspaper, highway, and river valley all do visible work: government in the middle, travel at the edges, and farm country filling in the space between.
