Marine on St. Croix, MN

Marine on St. Croix began as Marine Mills in 1839 at Minnesota's first commercial sawmill on the St. Croix River. The mill operated until 1895, and its ruins remain on a bluff managed by the city. That industrial start still organizes the town's physical story: the river, mill site, and old village buildings are close enough to read as one lumber-town landscape.

The historic layers continue through the 1870 General Store, Stone House Museum, and 1888 Village Hall. The hall still houses city council and planning commission meetings and the community library, while the museum holds objects from early settler life. A ferry connected Marine to the Wisconsin shore from 1856 to 1954, making the river crossing part of local history. Today Minnesota Highway 95 serves as the main road, tying the compact river settlement to Washington County and the Twin Cities' northern edge. Marine on St. Croix carries its public business in buildings that also preserve its lumber past.
