About Marion

Marion is a small census-designated place in Marion Township, Shelby County, Indiana, near the county's western side. It is the Marion that is easy to miss: the larger Indiana city with the same name is in Grant County, while this settlement sits in farm country near Shelbyville. The 2020-2024 American Community Survey lists 276 residents.

A townsite was laid out in the early 1820s, and a post office opened in 1823. The post office was renamed Noah in 1836 to avoid confusion with the larger Marion, then closed in 1902. Local residents once pushed for the county seat, but Shelbyville won that decision. Today Marion is a rural name on Shelby County maps, tied to Marion Township and a small network of county roads. Its history has an odd second chapter: the name returned to the Census Bureau's CDP list in the 2020s, carrying an old settlement name into a modern statistical boundary. The old name still belongs to the township around it.
