About Marion
Marion is an Olmsted County community of 271 residents at the 2020 census, tucked inside Marion Township about nine miles southeast of Rochester. The village was founded in 1855 or 1856, and the township took its name from it when it organized in 1858. A post office opened in 1857 and remained until 1905, giving the early settlement a formal link to the outside world while the roads and farms around it filled in.
Marion once had bigger ambitions. In the 1850s it competed with Rochester for prominence in Olmsted County, and early merchants, blacksmiths, wagon-makers, and a druggist served the surrounding countryside. That old commercial energy is mostly a memory now, but the township still maintains a board, roads, and town hall around the community. Marion is an easy place to miss if you only look for incorporated cities; follow the township name and the old post-office story, and the village comes back into view. That connection still matters.
