Marion, PA

Marion is a Franklin County census-designated place along U.S. 11 in southwest Guilford Township, six miles south of Chambersburg and five miles north of Greencastle. Interstate 81 runs along the eastern edge with access at Exit 10, so the community sits between two north-south routes and uses nearby boroughs and Chambersburg for much of its larger-service map. The place began around 1810 as Independence, gained the Marion name when its post office was established in the 1830s, and received a street layout in 1876.

That history still shows up in the institutions serving the crossroads. A local school has been part of the community since 1900, the fire department dates to 1945, and the Marion Athletic Association began in 1947. U.S. 11 carries the main route through the community, while I-81 handles longer trips toward Carlisle, Hagerstown, and the Cumberland Valley. Marion has no separate municipal government; its day-to-day map is a county community organized around a few civic groups, nearby schools, and the highway links between larger Franklin County towns.
