Marissa, IL

Marissa is a St. Clair County village in southeastern Illinois, about forty miles from St. Louis. The first post office in the area was established by James Wilson Jr. in 1846; while reading Josephus, he chose the name Marissa from the ancient place Mareshah. The village was laid out in 1867, and the Cairo Short Line Railroad created Marissa Station in 1871. Before the farms, post office, and rail line took shape, the area had been home to Native peoples whose trails and artifacts remain part of the older regional story.

Coal shaped the next century. More than a dozen mines operated within three miles of Marissa for roughly one hundred years, drawing workers and expanding the village before the industry declined. The Marissa Coal Festival, founded in 1979, keeps that history in the annual calendar, with a Main Street parade and community events. A coal miner monument in the village park was dedicated in 1990. The Marissa Historical and Genealogical Society, founded in 1969, preserves family records and local photographs, while the village maintains police, public works, the Macke Community Center, the Linda Louise Fitness Center, and links to Marissa Community Unit School District 40. Marissa is a rail-and-coal town still tending its own archive and its own summer traditions.
