Marmet, WV

Marmet sits along the Kanawha River in Kanawha County, a town whose map is still organized by water, locks, highways, and the industrial valley around Charleston. The settlement began as Elizaville, named for Leonard Morris's wife, after Morris established a community here in the late eighteenth century. Coal and chemical production later made the Kanawha a working transport corridor, and Marmet's location kept the river at the center of that movement.

Marmet Locks and Dam opened in 1933–34 and still links the Kanawha Valley to raw materials and product markets. The town's current municipal rhythm is more ordinary: agendas, permits, business licenses, Kanawha PSD matters, recreation, and notices handled through the town office on MacCorkle Avenue. The river carries the industrial history, while the locks give it a working piece of infrastructure residents see every day. The river also sets the town's outlook, bridges, industrial noise, and sense of direction. Marmet is a small Kanawha town where the waterway is both scenery and machinery.
