About Mars

Located about 20 miles north of downtown Pittsburgh, Mars is a quiet borough in southern Butler County with plenty of personality. Home to roughly 1,500 residents, it offers a relaxed, small-town atmosphere while sitting just minutes from the shopping and dining hubs in nearby Cranberry Township. The town picked up its out-of-this-world name in the late 1800s after a postal mix-up, and the community has proudly embraced the theme ever since.

Right in the center of town sits a giant flying saucer parked on the square, serving as a playful backdrop for community festivals and everyday photo ops. Families are often drawn to the borough for the strong Mars Area School District, whose sports teams fittingly go by the Fighting Planets.
