Mars, PA

Mars is a Butler County borough about 18 miles north of Pittsburgh and 12 miles southwest of Butler, set in a small valley along Breakneck Creek. The 2020 census counted 1,458 residents. It began with farms and water-powered gristmills, then the Pittsburgh, New Castle and Lake Erie Railroad arrived in the late 1870s. The borough incorporated in 1895. Mars got its name when the railroad stop called Overbrook conflicted with the post office, so railroad and postal authorities settled on the planetary name.

The town's signature oddities are right in the local map: the Mars “Spaceship” roadside landmark and the restored Mars Station museum. The station keeps that railroad chapter visible in the center. The Mars Area School District serves the borough and nearby townships, while the Breakneck Creek valley still gives the place its shape. Mars' local scoop is a small Pittsburgh-area borough with a mill-and-rail past, a flying-saucer landmark, and a name that began as a mailroom mix-up.
