Mason, TN

Mason sits in Tipton County along U.S. 70, with the road carrying present-day traffic through a town whose older shape came from the railroad. In December 1855, the Memphis and Ohio Railroad completed its line from Memphis to Nashville through what is now Mason, bringing the first rail service to Tipton County. Trinity Church, built in 1870 and designed by English architect James Balfour, gives the town another strong historical marker. The federal detention facility is a more recent, very different piece of the local map.

Day to day, Mason works as a small municipal center for the surrounding farm roads. Town hall meetings and city utilities—water, sewer, and natural gas—put basic services close to residents, while U.S. 70 points toward the wider Memphis-area network.
