Massieville, OH

Massieville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Ross County, south of Chillicothe in the Appalachian foothills of southern Ohio. The 2020 census counted 584 residents. Chillicothe City School District serves the community, while the roads north lead into the Scioto River valley and the county seat. The place has a foothill setting and little municipal machinery, surrounded by wooded hills, small farms, and stream bottoms.

Names tell the older story. The place was also called Massie and Waller, and Massieville took its final name from Waller Massie, proprietor of a local sawmill. That mill connection fits the landscape: timber and small waterways shaped the work around Chillicothe before modern roads tied the community more closely to the city. The sawmill gave the place an early working center, and its name still carries that connection. Massieville remains a small Ross County place with a sawmill namesake, a school district connection, and a location where Appalachian Ohio begins to rise south of Chillicothe.
