Mathews, VA

Mathews is the county-seat village at the end of a long Virginia Middle Peninsula story. It began as Westville, became Mathews County’s seat when the county split from Gloucester in 1791, and is now called Mathews Court House or simply Mathews. The downtown historic district grew from an agrarian village into the county’s civic center, with the brick courthouse dating to about 1830 and the courthouse square still organizing the middle of town.

That square is unusually legible: the courthouse, old jail, sheriff’s office, county offices, monument, and small historic buildings sit close together. The Tompkins Cottage Museum, a circa-1820 wooden house, gives the district another fixed point. Mathews County’s wider history reaches toward Gwynn’s Island, New Point Comfort Lighthouse, and the Chesapeake-side waterways, but Mathews itself is the courthouse village where county business grew out of an older farm community. The local read is simple: Westville on the map, Mathews on the mailbox, and a courthouse green that still tells you why the settlement is here.
