Maxwell, IN

Maxwell is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Center Township, Hancock County, Indiana. The settlement was laid out and platted in 1881, taking its name from a man who worked on building the railroad into town. The post office followed in 1882, and State Road 9 still gives Maxwell its main north-south line. The surrounding country is a mix of farm fields, scattered homes, and the small roads leading toward Greenfield. The old railroad connection remains part of the town’s basic orientation.

Education has given Maxwell an importance beyond its size. Maxwell High School once had its own basketball program and built a gymnasium in 1919, an early example of the school-centered life that shaped many Indiana communities. The town’s students are now part of Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation, with Maxwell Intermediate School located on North Main Street and Greenfield-Central High School serving older students. Maxwell remains close enough to Greenfield for regional services, but its railroad name, post office, school building, and rural grid keep the place distinct.
