Mayesville, SC

Mayesville is a town in Sumter County, South Carolina, shaped by the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad. The line crossed the Mayes family's property in 1852, and the settlement began as Mayes Station, replacing the earlier name Bradleyville. Cotton and tobacco gave the surrounding countryside its commercial rhythm, while Mayesville handled the practical work of processing and selling farm products and gathering supplies. The railroad bed is gone now, but the town's historic layout still follows that nineteenth-century connection between land, depot, and main street.

The Kineen Hotel remains one of the clearest reminders of the town's commercial era, and the Mayesville Historic District gathers additional buildings from that period. Just outside town, the Goodwill Parochial School tells a different and equally important story. The school served African American children from the 1870s through 1960, offering elementary and high school education when South Carolina did not provide equal access. After decades closed, the building is being carried forward as the Goodwill Cultural Center, with exhibits, programs, and community events planned around the Salem Black River area.
