Mayfield, PA

Mayfield is a Lackawanna County borough about fourteen miles northeast of Scranton, set in the old mining and manufacturing country of the Lackawanna River valley. The 2020 census counted 1,763 residents. The borough grew from Glenwood, a settlement connected to the Hillside Coal and Iron Company and the Glenwood coal breaker. The Delaware and Hudson rail system moved anthracite toward New York markets, giving Mayfield a reason to exist beyond the hills around it.

The name changed more than once. The community was organized as Glenwood in 1881, became Mayville in 1888, and took the Mayfield name in 1890 because another Pennsylvania post office already used Mayville. Coal came first, but a silk mill and other factories later joined the local mix. The old coal-country setting remains part of the address. Today, Mayfield keeps its borough government and small-town street grid while Scranton supplies the larger regional pull. It is a place where mail, rail, coal, and a name change tell the whole story.
