McArthur, CA

McArthur is a small ranching community in Shasta County, tucked into the Fall River Valley about four miles east of Fall River Mills. The setting is shaped by water and working ground: Fall River rises from springs nearby, then moves through pasture and farm country before joining the Pit River. Hay, irrigated pasture, cattle, and timber have all been part of the valley economy, and McArthur’s warm-summer Mediterranean climate fits the long agricultural rhythm. For a place this small, the landscape supplies most of the orientation.

The big local feature is McArthur Swamp, just north of town. It covers about 4,491 acres under a conservation easement held by Ducks Unlimited after PG&E donated the land. That gives the community a second identity beside ranching: it sits at the edge of a broad wetland used by waterfowl and watched over through local land stewardship. Drive out from town and the change is easy to feel—open fields, spring-fed channels, wet ground, and a horizon broken by the valley’s low mountain walls. McArthur is a place where farm work and habitat management share the same map.
