McConnelsville, OH

McConnelsville is Morgan County’s seat, laid out in 1817 on the east bank of the Muskingum River and named for Robert McConnel, one of the early townsite residents. Across the water, Malta makes the place a two-community river crossing. The downtown square holds the Greek Revival courthouse and the 1894 Twin City Opera House, while Lock 7 is part of the Muskingum’s hand-operated lock system. Nearby Miner’s Memorial Park displays the bucket from Big Muskie, tying the county seat to the coal country in the surrounding hills.
