About McCormick
McCormick is the county seat of McCormick County, named for inventor Cyrus Hall McCormick. Gold was found here around 1850, and McCormick bought the Dorn Gold Mine in 1869, donated land for a town, and gave it his name in 1882. The mine later produced manganese and stayed open into the 1930s. Today the town’s historic map includes the J.J. Dorn House, Guillebeau House, Dorn Mill and Gin, and the Heritage Gold Mine. McCormick is western South Carolina with mining, namesakes, and a county seat built around both.
