McCrory, AR

McCrory is a Woodruff County city in the Arkansas Delta, with 1,583 residents at the 2020 census. The town's rail-era commercial core, waterworks, and Dr. John William Morris Clinic are listed historic properties, while McCrory School District provides public education through McCrory High School. Farming still sets the county's working rhythm: rice, soybeans, and wheat are major crops, and granaries and farm-service businesses connect the city to the fields around it. The city remains a place where field work and public business meet.

The area was settled around 1840 and was once known as Jennie's Colony, though local accounts give several versions of that name. Wade McCrory donated land for an Iron Mountain Railroad depot and right-of-way in 1886, the first train arrived in 1887, and the city incorporated in 1890. McCrory grew into a Woodruff County business hub with stores, mills, newspapers, and banks. Today the railroad story survives in the street grid and historic buildings, while agriculture and county services remain the practical center of town.
