McKnightstown, PA

McKnightstown sits in Franklin Township, Adams County, along a stretch of the Lincoln Highway that still shows how an older road shaped local settlement. The community was once part of the Cashtown-McKnightstown census-designated place before the two places were separated for the 2010 census. In 1919, the U.S. Army’s Motor Transport Corps convoy crossed through on its coast-to-coast road experiment; the highway bypass of 1948–49 changed the traffic pattern, but not the name’s place in Adams County road history.

Today McKnightstown is a small crossroads community among farm fields, orchards, historic buildings, and the roads leading toward Gettysburg, Cashtown, and South Mountain. The Lincoln Highway corridor brings heritage travelers, while nearby farms and county services supply the less glamorous routines of work, school, repairs, and errands. Adams County’s fruit-growing landscape gives the surrounding country its seasonal texture, and Gettysburg broadens the choices for shopping, health care, and tourism jobs.
