McNair, VA

McNair occupies a compact piece of western Fairfax County where an airport employment district, planned housing, and major transportation corridors meet. The community lies immediately east of Washington Dulles International Airport, between the Dulles Toll Road and Route 28. McNair Farms supplies much of its residential fabric through townhouses, apartments, and other attached housing organized around neighborhood streets and a village shopping center. To the north, Dulles Corner adds offices, hotels, and commercial development; Airbus maintains its U.S. commercial-aircraft headquarters there. This mix accommodates a substantial population in a comparatively small area: 21,598 people lived in the census-designated place in 2020. It is neither simply an airport-edge office park nor a single residential subdivision, but a close juxtaposition of both. Daily movement is shaped by those boundaries. Fairfax Connector routes 901 and 951 serve stops along McNair Farms Drive and Coppermine Road.

Their current stop lists connect the neighborhood to Herndon and Innovation Center Metrorail stations, and route 951 continues into Reston. Drivers have quick access to Route 28 and the Dulles Toll Road, though those same roads and the large office parcels divide the surrounding landscape into distinct pockets. The most substantial nearby public open space is Frying Pan Farm Park, just southeast of McNair. Fairfax County preserves a working interpretation of a 1920s-to-1950s farm there, with livestock, historic farm buildings, free self-guided visits, hiking and equestrian trails, wagon rides, and seasonal programs. Its annual 4-H fair and carnival adds animal shows, farm demonstrations, rides, and exhibits. Within McNair Farms itself, the village center and neighborhood amenities handle many shorter errands and recreation needs; for rail, large parks, and county services, residents connect outward to the broader Herndon-Reston area.
