Mead, NE

Mead is a Saunders County village built around the railroad and the farm country west of Omaha. The 2020 census counted 617 residents. Homesteaders arrived by the late 1860s, and the settlement was first called Saunders when the railroad reached the site in 1877. The Omaha and Republican Valley Railroad registered a village plat soon afterward, giving Mead a compact center amid broad Nebraska fields.

The name changed to Mead in 1880 after the Union Pacific acquired the line, likely honoring a railroad official. The village’s early population was chiefly Swedish, and that heritage remains part of the local story alongside the depot-era streets and agricultural businesses. Mead sits at about 1,207 feet above sea level, with roads leading toward Saunders County farms and the larger Omaha area. The rail story remains visible. It is a small Nebraska railroad village whose name changed with the line, whose first residents came largely from Sweden, and whose present map still follows the original rail settlement.
