Melbourne, IA

Melbourne is a Marshall County city platted in 1882 by the Milwaukee Land Company and incorporated in 1895. Its original growth came with the railroad, and Melbourne earned a distinctive place in local history as the only Marshall County town served continuously by two major railroads. That history placed the community in the middle of Iowa's farm-and-freight system, with grain, people, mail, and machinery moving through town.

Today, Melbourne's scale is small, but the two-railroad story still helps make sense of its street pattern and sense of connection. The city sits within reach of Marshalltown and the central Iowa network, while local government, schools, churches, and Main Street businesses keep everyday life close to home. Iowa's rail lines have changed owners and uses over the years, yet the larger pattern remains recognizable: a town laid out for transportation, surrounded by open farm country, and still tied to the routes that made it grow. The tracks also placed Melbourne within reach of Marshalltown, Tama, and the larger central Iowa market.
