Melcher-Dallas, IA

Melcher-Dallas is a Marion County city formed by the 1986 merger of the separate communities of Melcher and Dallas. Both towns grew around coal mining, and the Red Rock Coal Company mine near Melcher was Iowa’s third-largest coal mine in 1919, producing 187,427 tons and employing 345 men that year. The last local mines closed in 1952, leaving a coal history that still shapes the city’s name, commemorations, and civic stories. The two communities each developed their own civic histories before the 1986 merger into one city.

Melcher-Dallas Community School District operates the local public schools and serves the city and surrounding rural area. Residents mark the merger with Merger Days each May, while Coal Miners Day keeps the earlier mining era in the community calendar. A local enrichment group now works on heritage projects, education, scholarships, and business information. Melcher-Dallas is an Iowa city where a former mining center has carried its school, agricultural setting, and two-town history into one present-day community.
