About Melville
Melville is a Town of Huntington hamlet and census-designated place on the Long Island side of Suffolk County’s border with Nassau County. Its population was 19,284 in 2020. The area was known to Indigenous people as Sunsquams, then as Samuel Ketcham’s Valley in the 17th century. It later became Sweet Hollow, a name linked to plentiful honey bees and honey found in trees. A Presbyterian church was built at Old Country and Sweet Hollow roads in 1829. Melville’s office base has included U.S. headquarters for Canon USA, Leviton, Henry Schein, Nikon USA, and MSC Industrial Direct, along with significant Estée Lauder operations.
