Mendon, IL

Mendon lies in west-central Adams County, a village named after Mendon, Massachusetts after its original name, Fairfield, conflicted with another Illinois town. It was platted in 1833 and sits on the road network around Illinois 61 and 336, about twelve miles from the Mississippi and a short drive from Quincy. The village grew in a productive farm landscape, with its routes connecting residents to fields, river towns, and county services. Its straight roads, farm edges, and broad skies still make that connection visible.

Today, Mendon’s small center works alongside the surrounding farms and wildlife. Community Unit School District 4 serves local families, while Quincy supplies larger shopping, medical care, restaurants, and higher education. Local government, churches, small businesses, and village events give the place its own calendar, and the roads keep it tied to the wider Adams County region. Mendon’s scale is modest, but its location is useful: close to the river, close to Quincy, and surrounded by the agricultural land that has supported the village since the nineteenth century.
