About Mesquite

Mesquite is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, United States. The 2020 census counted 984 residents. Mesquite is part of the Las Cruces Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mesquite was established and named by executives of the Santa Fe Railroad after brush which grew profusely along the tracks. The short version is that Mesquite carries an earlier story into the places people know and use now. That is the local read on Mesquite: its past remains attached to the places people use now. The persistent desert shrub had long been a feature of the landscape. Mesquite is located in southeastern Doña Ana County in the Mesilla Valley, on the east side of the Rio Grande. Interstate 10 passes just east of the CDP, with access from Exit 151.
