Mexico, IN

Mexico is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Jefferson Township, Miami County, where the 2020 census counted 915 residents. The place was laid out in 1834 along a trail beside the Eel River, a route that later became the Michigan Road. That road brought travelers through the community, including visitors who stopped at the River House Inn, once described as the only stopping point between Indianapolis and Michigan City. US 31 now forms the CDP's western edge, while Mexico sits northwest of central Miami County and north of Peru.

The river and old road still give Mexico its shape. Miami County describes the community as one of its oldest settlements, and several small businesses remain part of the local picture. Mexico's story is tied to movement: an Indigenous trail became a county road, the Eel River marked the settlement's edge, and a stopping place connected the town to the larger route across Indiana. Today, the CDP keeps that early transportation history alongside the homes and businesses gathered north of Peru.
